I have been training for
quite awhile. The
longer I have been breaking colts and tuning finished horses the
stronger I feel about having one real broke before going on the
pattern. I feel they need to be able to break at the poll; walk, trot,
lope on a loose rein as well as knowing their leads inside and out. I
want them moving off leg and rein pressure and knowing how to use their
body. There are a lot of barrel horses out there that start tipping
barrels or making simple positioning mistakes when that can be easily
corrected if your horse is broke and you can put it where you want,
when you want.
I feel that not only do performance horses need
worked in the arena environment but out on the trails and on cattle as
well. I have 300 acres of horse trails behind our house that I spend
a lot of time getting them broke on as well as keeping the more
seasoned barrel horses minds fresh and cool.

The most recent filly we broke was named Wallys Twisted Chick.
She came to us as an unbroke 3 year old; she had had her feet done and
been tied but didn't load or unload in the trailer, never had a bath,
etc. We put 60 days riding time on her; did arena and trail work with
her, she knew her leads very well and was starting to move off legs.
She stood tied for however long asked, loved getting baths and loaded
in the trailer without a fuss; backs out also! We trail rode her a
bunch and hauled her with us to some camping/overnight trail rides as
well as took her to a friends "cow pasture" and rode on the cow trails.
If any of you dont know what those are --- theyre about 2 foot wide,
straight up and down, curve around trees, over logs, etc etc. She got
really broke and always tried hard to please. We are very happy with
how this filly turned out and actually tried to buy her! We want to wish Julie the best of luck with her! Video of her progress
A
Personal filly of ours we started this year; she came to us as an
unbroke 3 year old who had never had her feet done or anything. She
stood tied decently for a short period of time. You can check her out
on the Prospects page of our site at http://www.chelseatanner.net/ctprospects.htm
-- She has been hauled to rodeos and barrel bashes and rode in the
arenas and around the rodeo grounds. She stands tied, loads and
unloads, stands for the farrier, loves bathes, longes, knows her leads
and is already starting to move off of my leg. She is really getting a
nice Whoa on her also. She has also been trail rode and taken on
overnight ride/camping. She has only had 16 rides. Here are some videos Ride #15 Ride #16 Ride #11
Another young filly, Perks. She is a 2 year old and has now had 16
rides also. She has been hauled all over the Midwest the last two
years, stands for the farrier, walks, trots, lopes; knows her leads
very well. Has a nice stop on her and is really soft in the poll/face
already. She ties, bathes, clips and hauls great. She isn't moving off
our leg as well as Freedom but shes just a two year old with 16 rides
so we arent upset; it comes with time and each horse is an individual.
Here are a couple videos of her Ride #15 - First time asking to lope Ride #9
